TaxiBot Trials Accelerate Sustainable Aviation and Green Taxiing Innovation

Trials of the TaxiBot solution continue gathering momentum as airports and aviation stakeholders increasingly focus on sustainable aviation, airport electrification, and innovative ways of reducing CO2 emissions aviation.

The TaxiBot is a pilot-controlled hybrid-electric taxiing system designed to reduce aircraft fuel consumption and emissions during ground movements. By allowing aircraft to perform ENG OFF taxi operations while keeping pilots fully in control, TaxiBot supports a new generation of green taxiing concepts aimed at improving operational efficiency and environmental performance.

TaxiBot forms part of the European HERON initiative, led by Airbus, which focuses on improving aircraft operational efficiency both in the air and on the ground. The project brings together multiple aviation stakeholders to develop technologies capable of supporting the future of sustainable aviation.

As airports move toward carbon neutral objectives and Zero Ground Emission operations, technologies such as TaxiBot become increasingly important. Combined with broader APU OFF initiatives and supporting airport infrastructure including GPU, PCA (Pre Conditioned Air), FEGP (Fixed Electrical Ground Power) and integrated COMBO solutions, sustainable taxiing technologies can significantly reduce fuel burn and airport emissions.

Trials performed at several airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, continue demonstrating the operational potential of advanced taxiing solutions. These initiatives illustrate how innovative technologies can support airport transformation while creating measurable environmental and operational benefits.

As the HERON initiative approaches its conclusion, the lessons learned and technologies validated through the program will continue shaping the future of cleaner airport operations and green taxiing strategies worldwide.
