Electric TaxiBot Starts Operations at Schiphol Airport with easyJet
Smart Airport Systems is proud to contribute to a major milestone in sustainable aviation as the world’s first Electric TaxiBot officially enters operational service at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
Developed to transform aircraft ground operations, the Electric TaxiBot enables aircraft to taxi between gate and runway without using their main engines, significantly reducing fuel burn, CO₂ emissions, noise, and local air pollutants during one of the most energy-intensive phases of airport operations.
The first commercial operations are now taking place at Schiphol in collaboration with LVNL, easyJet, Airbus, Menzies Aviation and key airport stakeholders. Following successful trials, four easyJet Airbus aircraft are being equipped for TaxiBot operations, marking an important step toward scalable sustainable taxiing.
According to project data, each TaxiBot-assisted movement can save approximately 95 kg of fuel and around 299 kg of CO₂ emissions per flight while also reducing operational noise on the airport platform.
This achievement builds upon years of development and collaboration under the European HERON initiative and supports Schiphol Airport’s ambition to become an emissions-free airport operation by 2030. Studies conducted at Schiphol suggest large-scale deployment of TaxiBot technology could generate substantial reductions in airport ground emissions and fuel consumption.
The Electric TaxiBot represents more than a new vehicle. It demonstrates that innovation in ground handling can deliver tangible environmental benefits today while supporting the aviation industry’s long-term sustainability objectives.
As airports worldwide seek practical solutions to reduce emissions without impacting operations, Smart Airport Systems remains committed to delivering technologies that help make aviation leaner, greener, and smarter.
